I wonder why one bracket cross-brackets right away, (1st rd winner vs loser) and the other doesn't (Winner vs winner, and loser vs. loser)? Unless it's round robin, maybe?

Without digging into it, it feels like Prep got a fairly favorable draw. You'd rather play a team from Idaho than one from the south. Likewise with Michigan in the 2nd round. Hopefully they can keep going, baseball talent in Omaha is really good.

It's a different format than the rest of the legion tournaments. The World Series uses 4-team pools and you play round robin (so three games).

The top two teams from each pool advance to the semifinals, where from that point on the tournament is single elimination.

The Idaho team that Creighton Prep just played has won the last two ALWS titles.

What's the tie- breaker, do you know, if they all go 1-1? Interesting. Good on them. Dispatch the best team first!

Given that it’s a four-team round robin, everyone plays 3 games in pool play.

There are four possible outcomes with that scenario.

3-0, 2-1, 1-2, 0-3
2-1, 2-1, 2-1, 0-3
3-0, 1-2, 1-2, 1-2
2-1, 2-1, 1-2, 1-2

The first and last of these give you two clear team to advance. In the middle two scenarios, you have three that tie for two spots. I know that runs allowed and runs scored are used in breaking ties.

Correct. The last few times the winning team has gone to Game 4 of the MLB World Series.

The team Prep beat (Idaho Falls Post 56) is the two time defending American Legion World Series champion.

Yeah, for some reason i was thinking 3 teams. Really dumb question!

Looks like Prep will advance with a win over Virginia (0-2) and Michigan over Idaho. A win and Idaho over Michigan will create a three-way tie at 2-1 with head to head being 1-1 for all.

Through two games...

RUNS ALLOWED
Michigan: 5
Prep: 6
Idaho: 8

RUNS SCORED
Michigan: 8
Prep: 8
Idaho: 9

COIN
No idea what they'll use. Likely quarters. Maybe a buffalo nickel.

Prep will advance if...
Prep wins AND Michigan beats Idaho;
OR
Prep wins AND will get the tiebreaker over Idaho if Virginia scores no more than one more run than Michigan in an Idaho victory;
OR
Prep wins AND will get the tiebreaker over Idaho if Virginia scores exactly two more runs than Michigan in an Idaho victory AND Prep scores two or more runs than Idaho scores;
OR
Prep wins AND will get the tiebreaker over Idaho if Virginia scores exactly two more runs than Michigan in an Idaho victory AND Prep scores exactly one run more than Idaho scores AND Prep is among the two teams who win the coin flip.

Pretty simple.

Chesapeake, VA had two outs and no one on in the top of the 4th but then a hit by pitch and back to back home runs has given them a 4-3 lead over Prep.

Prep lost 6-4 in 9 innings. At 1-2, they are still alive but need Midland, Michigan to beat Idaho Falls. If that happens, Prep, Idaho Falls and Chesapeake, VA would all be 1-2 and the tie breakers described on this thread would come into play. With the Prep loss, Midland, Michigan advances to the semis regardless of the outcome of their game with Idaho Falls. Troy, Alabama and Shrewsberry, Mass are the two teams from other pool that have advanced to semis tomorrow.

Creighton Prep falls 6-4 today and with other results, Prep will not advance to the semifinals. They end their season at 42-14.

Thanks for all of the updates. Another great season for Prep and Nebraska legion baseball. Many teams who make the World Series consist of players from multiple high schools whereas the Nebraska teams that qualify are mostly or entirely from just one high school. The ESPN announcers made a brief reference to this during the Prep/Idaho Falls game. I believe another Omaha team that made the Series a few years back was also mostly or entirely all Omaha Westside players. By contrast, the Idaho Falls teams that won in 19 and 21 both drew players from five Class A/B sized high schools. Legion rules allow for this as long as the total enrollment is under 7500.

Actually the team from Idaho was the defending champion.

Congrats to Troy, AL on winning the title and to Idaho Falls for a great season. It was a great game and a great tournament. Thanks also to Alum-Ni for all you do on this page.
