Absolutely crazy that Sr. 5'10" 220 lb. RB/LB/P Dylan Loberg of Randolph didn't make the D-2 All State Team much less being left off the Honorable Mention list! The kid had another good year running the football with over 1,500 yards rushing and almost a 10 yard per carry average and his punting average was 39. He went over 5,000 yards rushing for his career and was only 130 yards short of 1,000 during an injury plagued freshman season which kept him from being the fourth Nebraska high school football player of all time in rushing for 1,000 yards in all four years of his high school career. That's supposedly not good enough for All State consideration? Wow!

Great point. Loatsey
What I don't get is how 4 loss teams get kids on 1st team all-state teams, taking nothing away from these kids, to me its a joke. I guess its a popularity contest then it is who really earned it. Even the team rankings this year were a joke.

I may be wrong but I think coaches nominate their own players and pretty much anyone that gets nominated but not selected gets an 'honorable mention'. Maybe his coach dropped the ball and didn't get his name sent in - ????

I think I know what you're looking at bugaha, and I can't agree more. Proves no one making money to write is paying any attention whatsoever. It is a popularity, pre-season hype wins everything, contest.

I disagree with the thought process of eliminating kids from teams that aren't very successful. EX: CJ Johnson was undoubtedly the best WR in the entire state of Nebraska. Bellevue West lost 4 times this year. Are you suggesting that because they lost 4 times CJ Johnson isn't worthy of being an all-state WR? He led the state in yards, yards per reception, and touchdowns. He was second in the entire state in receptions.despite only playing 10 games (when the people you are suggesting are more deserving likely advanced in the playoffs and played 12 or 13 games).

The best 22 players should be recognized, despite the success of their individual teams. I'm always disgusted with the Heisman trophy voters because those people seem to eliminate kids that aren't from greatly successful teams. A few years that come to mind...2000 Chris Weinke wins the Heisman (likely because he was FSU QB and they were good), meanwhile Drew Brees is putting up sick numbers at lowly Purdue and LT is running wild at TCU (Both low performing programs). In 2003 Jason White wins the Heisman (OU's QB), meanwhile Larry Fitzgerald and Eli Manning (Pitt and Ole Miss, respectively) come in 2nd and 3rd, solely because they played on less successful teams. Just my thoughts.

Don't try and figure it out because there is no set process.
Had the chance to speak to Ryly Jane Hambleton several years ago about this subject and her explanation pretty much left me dumb-founded. Too long of story to explain.
It's also a non scientific process so there will be errors. You see kids in high school put up some great numbers so it is tough to choose between possibly 6 or 7 kids that rush for well over a 1000 yards and 20-some tds for 2 rb spots. It's unfortunate that the Loberg kid didn't get recognized for his football accomplishments.

Yes and no. Dylan L. played on a far less talented team than the teams that finished ahead of them in the final top ten ratings, therefore playing 2-3 less games than those other teams. Also, as you can tell by watching some teams play and by how some coaches coach, that they are purposefully padding their players stats! Loberg rarely played in the second half of any blowout game and his coach didn't do him any favors to help with his stats either. He only averaged 16 carries a game, where the other backs averaged in the high 20's to 30's. If you compare the amount of carries, Loberg had way fewer, but his per carry average was just a hair under 10. For example, in the Randolph-Kenesaw game, the coaches two boys from Kenesaw carried the ball 73 out of the 74 plays they ran and they played until the final buzzer. I think Loberg only had 16 carries or maybe less actually. The one Schnitzler then got All-State as a punter, even though Loberg had the highest punting average between the two and actually the second highest in all of D-2. My point is, All-State teams are mostly based solely on the success of their teams and not All-State as an individual.

In terms of honorable mention, i think it takes a nomination from a coach or a mention from an opposing coach to be considered.

In terms of all state, rarely do you see a player who is on the all-state team that does not deserve to be on it. There are always a lot of very quality players in each class and picking just a couple is difficult. It would appear that being on a team that makes the playoffs is quite helpful, but not always a pre-requisite. Also making it difficult is there is no way to actually watch every single player who is nominated. Unless a team makes it to the state finals, you couldn't possibly expect anybody to be able to see every nominated player.

Congrats to all the players on all the lists as I'm sure they are deserving of some recognition.

So other words NO, so how else is a person suppose to pick all state, The coaches vote and he did not get enough votes and the paper cannot go to every game in the state to see every player at every class. His exposure was low due to lack of team success and he did not receive enough votes from opposing coaches and the other 3 did. I dont know how the hell you guys expect this to work Its all ready a joke that you have coaches that there teams go 1-7 or 2-7 and put 3 or 4 guys up for all state and they get honorable mention Have a little pride if your team is 2-7 or hell even 4-5 you do not have 3 or 4 all state kids, Freaking stupid

calm down allnut. He (Loberg) did have better numbers (300 more yards in two less games) than one of the three RB's and he had better numbers than the selection for the punter position for your information. His team was 7-3 not 1-7, they won their first playoff game by a blowout over a team they blew out earlier in the year. That team's player (team finished 5-4) was selected for the All State punter position with an average of 34 yards per punt compared to Loberg's 39 yard average. Loberg put up huge numbers and out performed the guy in both of those head to head matchups. Loberg was an All State player the year before. Randolph lost by 11 in the second round to Kenesaw and they (Randolph) finished rated eighth in the state. So none of your scenarios are correct and actually your bad record point makes my point! You seem kind of testy over the whole situation. Were you or someone you know jilted in this way before or are you on the selection committee? I do agree coaches need to be better judges of talent and not send in undeserving individuals for All State when they rightfully know their kid is not All State material. This is not the case here. Loberg was one of 5 players in the entire state this year to go over 5,000 rushing yards in his career. The other four made their respective All State teams.

sorry didnt mean to seem upset, I dont know any of his stats and sounds like he should have got on, BUT it comes down to the coaches he played and some where that went wrong, so not sure why, but most people want to blame the papers and its not them, but a combination of coaches putting up and campaigning for players that dont deserve it and other coaches not taking the time to write in players who do because they didnt have anyone. It wont ever be great until it is taking that way by all

Its all about giving recognition for a good year. In the smaller classes, a lot of these studs could/should be listed on both sides of the ball... the most productive offense in the state this year (Anselmo-Merna) have their one-two punch (Gilligan & Geiser) getting honors on defense rather than taking away more of the coveted rb & qb slots. Don't even get started on the east/west bias for the popularity contest, either, whether it be for rankings, honors and certainly for coverage and respect.
