The AHSAA (Alabama's equivalent to the NSAA) approved the use of instant replay for high school football in Alabama beginning this fall.

Several states, including New Jersey and Minnesota, have used instant replay in state championship games, but Alabama is believed to be the first to have instant replay available for use at all high school games. The National Federation of High Schools does not allow instant replay for high school football, but Alabama was granted an exemption to experiment with this for up to three years.

AHSAA will partner with DVSport, a company that specializes in instant replay and will provide equipment to schools to facilitate in-game instant replay. Costs have not yet been disclosed.

The system will plug into the current video-taping capabilities of a team, and officials will likely access the video replay by using a handheld tablet, such as an iPad, on the field.

Replay is not mandated at all games, but many schools, skewing toward schools in larger classifications and affluent areas, are expected to buy the equipment.
