CLASS C1

In class C1 and C2, similar to volleyball this year, each class will be divided into four regions, based on geography. The westernmost region will consist of one sub-district with 5 or 6 teams. The other three regions will have 15-18 teams each. Each of those three regions will serpentine into three sub-districts of 4 to 6 teams, based on wildcard points through Saturday, February 15. The 10 sub-district winners and six wildcards will then qualify for district finals.

Why are there so many regions in D1 and D2? As compared to C1 and C2's like 4 regions.
C1 and C2 will eventually look like D1 and D2. The difference is that C1 and C2 will divide into sub-districts towards the end of the year and will be serpentined by their region. D1 and D2 have subs that are predetermined before the season starts. Hope that makes sense.

C1 and C2 are the only classes using the regional format. Towards the end of the season, traditional sub-districts will be created out of the serpentine-ranked regional teams.

D1 and D2 are assigned sub-districts solely on geography, like has always been done.

So why is C1 and C2 different than all the other classes why not do the same format from the start?

It as a compromise between the eastern have the state and the panhandle for how to solve the problem of 3 top 5 teams ending up in the same sub district. Panhandle wanted to stick with geography due to travel purposes so by splitting everything else up into regions, top teams may be dispersed a bit better after the results of the regular season has been accounted for. Volleyball did it this year and it worked pretty well. C1 and C2 are more alike than D1 and D2 so the proposal was only for those two classes. If it was for those classes as well it wouldn’t have passed.

Because the format only passed in those two classes. (I can't remember if it was proposed for Class D or not.)

Because D1 & D2 haven't made a dumb mistake yet and the subdistricts are based on geography to limit travel and costs. 🤷🏾
You seem to be in the minority of people I’ve heard comment on the regions. I’m curious what others think.

Twins why do you feel the way you do?

Mostly travel time/costs, but because it's not as big of a deal as (the eastern side of the state?) makes it.

Play the teams in your local area for subdistricts, then travel for district title game to make state.

Why force teams to travel 3-4 hours to play in subdistricts? In my experience, some teams are really bad and have no chance in hell to win a game in subs, so why make that team travel 3 hours just to lose right away when they could've done that close to home?

Why make the fans travel that far just to watch the bad team lose? Yes they want to show their support, but it's not exactly cheap to travel 3 hours one way.

The wildcard is there for a reason. If you had a great season, but are stuck with locally great teams, and you lose your subdistricts, you can still get a wildcard spot at district finals for a chance to go to state. I think there are up to 4 wildcard teams in Class D?

It happens often in my area as there have been 3 good teams in a 5-tean subdistrict. The high-ranking losing teams can still get the wildcard chance at going to district finals to compete for a chance to go to state.

This year for Class C volleyball, there was a region that had 4 teams travel anywhere from 2hr 50m - 4hr 6m for subdistricts. That subdistrict was scheduled over a 3 day period. One team played 3 nights in a row Monday - Wednesday and was 3 hours away. How is that fair to those parents and fans?

Everyone thinks they need to fix everything, even if it's not broken. They want to "get the best teams to state" but at what expense to the kids, parents, and fans? It's not fun riding a bus 4+ hours one way, knowing you don't stand a chance to beat the top team you have to play. Been there. Done that.

If you don't make it to state, maybe you weren't one of the best teams. If you couldn't win your sub
District and weren't high enough in the wildcard points to make district finals, were you really one of the best 8 teams in the state and going to win state?

Not everyone can make it to state every year and sometimes it's nice for the 'normally bad' teams to have a tiny chance to make it once in awhile, or to at least make a district finals during what they think is a great year for their school.

What about teams traveling in football playoffs 4+ hours one way and into a different time zone to play their game? Do we need to eliminate that as well? The regions worked out quite well leading into state volleyball as far as I could tell. More or less the top 16 teams made it to a district final game to go to state and the 8 best teams won there. The schools east of Grand Island that never thought they'd have to travel with regions because they don't think about there being a team that could be better than them in the west have learned that it is a real possibility. Rather than complain about having to travel to play games, how about focus on practicing and developing skills to get better so you can host yourself?

Two both of of the replies so far. I see both sides. And I'm 100% on board with 'we don't bi**h about traveling for football, why do we do it when it comes to girls sports...because that's what it comes down to... Football travel expenses are far far more than any volleyball team or basketball teams...simply because of the equipment required for football games. Nearly every team travels with 1-2 buses and a vehicle pulling a trailer in todays world.

Looking at volleyball, it seems that only 1 sub-district had multiple teams that had to travel more than an hour and a half...1 our of 18 in C1 and C2. I don't count the west most schools...that sub district was essentially unchanged and always has travel...something we can't help.

I'm all about teams traveling if someone earned the right to host. Get out and enjoy the trip.

The C2-9 volleyball sub will go down in history on this board. We know ALC and Sutton had to drive a lot. That had to be annoying, but at the end of the day, how often is that going to happen? It’s pretty cool they played hard a made it to a sub final.

The 16 best teams deserve to make it to the district final. At the end of the day that is what everyone should want. We don’t need a repeat of 14-11 Southwest team making state in 2017 and getting beat by 40 in the first round.

Sorry, I am not trying to argue, just trying to point out my reasons, so bear with me.

Can you imagine the football team traveling 4+ hours for 3 days in a row?

It's not so much the travel costs for the school, but the travel cost and time for the fans and parents that want to support their local team.

Most people work Monday - Wednesday, so they have to take off work 3 days in a row, as opposed to football taking off Friday afternoon each week. Team plays at 4:30pm, so fans get off work at noon to travel. Game ends at 6pm. Fans get home at 10pm. Rinse and repeat 2 or 3 days in a row.

It would appear that the 2017 issue was not subdistricts, but the issue was district finals.

If you win your subdistrict, the district finals reseed the entire state 1 - 16 instead of regional districts.

In 2017, district finals were regional. Apparently this was changed since then, so the problem is already fixed. Not sure when it was changed.

That solved the 4+ hour travel for multiple days and eliminates the 14-11 teams from making it to state since they are not one of the best 8 teams after district finals.

So if that fixed the issue, why did Class C change it for this year?

I get what you are saying but I think there needs to be a change in the dates of the subs - only allow subs to be played on Tuesday and Thursday. There is no need for a 3 day sub - that would solve the long hour drives on back to back nights. Volleyball teams play triangulars all the time, so I don't see why this would be an issue.

Triangulars are not best 3 out of 5 sets for most teams. Post season play has to be. Also, I don't know that it's fair to team B to play against team C, win, and then have to play team A the same night. I totally get it that Team B will rarely win that matchup, but I'm guessing most believe they should have an equal opportunity in that they get to be fresh when they play team A.

Correct me if I'm wrong - but weren't there teams that played 2 games in one night in subs? I understand what you're saying. Who gets to decide the dates? Host?

You make a good point. 6 teamers had to be 3 days I believe. 4 and 5 teamers could be 2 days. The NSAA has the dates decided, as district finals are the following Saturday.

Yes, some have played multiple 5-set games on the same day and subdistricts.

One sub had a bunny bracket scheduled in the late afternoon @4pm and the winner of that scheduled as the third game of the night @7pm
