Between having a very successful Wrestling Team and Boys Basketball team this year, what changed in Tilden? I remember a few years back they dropped to D-6 in football and I figured the school was gonna be facing consolidation in the near future. Now it seems to be that they are growing; being C-2 in basketball and having darn good athletes in multiple sports. Hopefully some other smaller communities can follow suit with what is happening in Tilden. Just curious if it was new businesses, housing developments or new administrative at the school. Definitely don’t see it from small towns much.

That's a great question. It's good to see. In football they went from 1-7 to a playoff spot, and looked to have a chance to win a couple more games. To,ugh day today, they were my darkhorse in C2, but all in all they seem to be trending the right direction.

at least they got their state "loser" t-shirts, right HP???:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

I think there's been some sort of small population increase, but they've also just had some more talented classes coming through. A couple of pretty athletic families with multiple kids going through high school together.

If they want, I guess. Dunno. But if they had lost to CC in a District Final and hadn't qualified, to lose to CC again, someone would be screeching and bleating that it wasn't "fair". And it's the ever-prized "FIRST round loser" shirts you are referring to! Over 80% of the teams down there are entitled to a "State loser" shirt. In this case however, Elkhorn Valley would have qualified under the common sense method, so, again, proving my point that dragging kids all over the state is a near-pointless exercise in hubris.

I think there are some really good youth programs going in Tilden right now, which helps too

Yup this right here they are gonna go on a very successful run in football, boys basketball, girls basketball. There only issue is they May move up into C1 or a big C2 in everything. They had 100 kids in 7th-12th grade 10 years ago. Now they have 200 with a booming elementary as well. No idea how they did it but it’s mighty impressive.

Build it and they will come…They built a new elementary school a couple years back and in that process added a new gym and weight room. They’ve had the coaches in place for a long time but I think the right families/kids coming in helped turn things around. Very happy to see coach Dittmer have continued success like always and coach Werner to finally break that barrier and get to state. He stuck with it when there were some very bad teams at EV and was finally rewarded this year with a trip to state. Even though it was a first round loss that trip alone will do more for future teams at EV than anything they’ll do in the summer months.
This is a result of great coaches finally getting the product they’ve been working for and I have a lot of respect for them. Great people on the court but even better people off the court.

They just got their taste of state this year, I think they will be a perennial state team going forward and will have success in multiple sports. Great people from the Tilden area, glad to see the school trending in the right direction.

If they're going to stay as a big C2, or maybe C1, they'll need to figure out hoops scheduling. They're in an area where they could definitely beef it up a little more to battle harden the team.
I understand conference games needing to be played, but their non-conf are teams like Hartington/Newcastle, Wausa, Plainview, Madison, Stanton, Bloomfield, etc. aren't helping them IMO

Mid-State Conference would make a lot of sense for a different conference if they sustain success and growth and if they ever got the invite. Imagine this conference. It would have been a dandy this season.

- Battle Creek
- Boone Central
- Cedar Catholic
- Crofton
- Elkhorn Valley
- GACC
- Norfolk Catholic
- O’neill
- Pierce
- Wayne

They do have great coaches!!
Thought they could have beat cedar today but their stud had way to much attitude. The coach needed to sit him

They used to be in the Mid-State. In the mid-1990s EV and Pierce essentially traded conferences.....with Pierce joining the Mid-State and EV joining the now-defunct NENAC.

At the time, Pierce was out-growing the other NENAC schools, while EV was declining in enrollment.

I think EV has benefited from a couple of things. First, some of their good athletes from the 90’s and early 2000’s have stuck around(or come back) and are raising their families in those communities and being involved with coaching at all levels. Also, Tilden and Meadow Grove are pretty easy drives to Norfolk. I imagine a lot of people commute to work at places like the hospital, Nucor, etc. I think they also have another housing development going in.

I don't know if this still holds true, but I seem to remember EV started hosting a youth basketball league. Again, not 100% sure, but I believe they play the young kids on an 8' rim and a scaled down court size.

I wonder how the beginnings of that league translate time wise to where their basketball program is today? Maybe there is no correlation.

I’m sure that is a huge factor. The same could be said for their wrestling program. They have a pretty good youth program going there too.
