GISH cancels their girls basketball season

2070 in the last classification, mind blowing to say the least. Grand Island is odd to me, although they aren't crazy succesful, I've always felt like there has been at least a sense of pride. The fact that they can't get 10 girls from that enrollment screams that there are bigger problems there than kids just not wanting to play basketball.

Yep.....just posted the numbers the other, second-largest in the state only behind the co-op of Omaha Buena Vista/Omaha Bryan at 2,214. (Another conversation for a different day, but blows my mind that two Class A schools have to co-op to field a basketball team.)

It’s an interesting approach. Sounds like they’ve talked to the parents and have a plan. I read that the coach has built up the youth program. Hope this plan works out, and hope the coop in omaha works too. We need these schools playing sports.

If this is what it takes, it is what it is. I still just can't fathom that a school of 2,070 students can't find 7 or 8 upper classmen who are interested in basketball.

Per the OWH, Grand Island was 1-22 last season and has not had a winning season since 2009-10. The Islanders have not won more than three games in each of the past seven seasons and in the past seven seasons have a record of 11-147.

Is this the same coach that has only won 11 games in 7 seasons?

I don’t believe so. I believe she has been there a couple years. From a comment I read in response to a friend on Facebook. This staff has been working to build the youth program after it had not had much contact with the high school program. That mom’s comment is where I read that youth numbers are good.

Currently, 69% of students are eligible for free and reduced priced meals and our student population is comprised of several racial and ethnic groups including 52% Hispanic.

Respectfully, I can think of a plethora of school districts with larger free and reduced/ethnic percentages than GISH that are suiting up basketball teams. That, in no way, is a reason for why they do not have kids participating.

The schools in bold have 50% and 50% in both criteria (11 Schools). Schools not in bold are teetering the line to meet that criteria (5 Schools). What I did leave out are schools that have a huge percent of free and reduced lunch, but don't meet the diversity criteria (Majority C2 and Below).

My point is there are other, smaller school districts in the state that face the same type of situation that have fielded teams (winners or not). The highest enrollment in the state, regardless of demographics and f/r rate, should allow you to get more than enough individuals to play a basketball season.

I understand and agree to a point, the list you provided are fielding teams, winning well thats not the case in most all cases BUT the issue is what are they doing in the lower levels and just Minority rate doest do it, the main trouble is Hispanic and Latino races are not participating in Basketball as much as other ethnic groups. Lot of this is do to first generation and lack of exposure or even knowledge of the sport itself. So when faced with a high Hispanic and Latino rate and have the effect of club volleyballl and adding girls wrestling, girls basketball players have dropped almost 20% in just 6 years state wide. This issue is going to continue and maybe get worse for a bunch of school who have these other factors at play.

I would like to see the schools with a 65% or high F/R rate and an Hispanic/Litino population of over 55% I think this would help narrow the connection greatly and show an alarming pattern that will take a couple generations to come out of.
