NSAA says beginning June 1 schools are permitted to open weight rooms for voluntary strength and conditioning sessions.

However, school-sponsored camps, clinics and open gyms are prohibited in any sport at this time.

The following are a list of guidelines that must be followed:

- Maintain social distance by being six-feet apart

- Groups should be of 10 students or less and must be pre-determined

- Once groups are determined, students may not switch groups

- Interaction between groups shall be avoided

- Sessions can only include weightlifting, running and exercises designed to promote physical fitness

- Sport-specific drills are not permitted, and sport-specific equipment may not be used

- Implement diligent and effective cleaning and disinfecting of frequently touched objects and surfaces following the guidance of the CDC

- It is the responsibility of each NSAA member school to comply with the above requirements

Because Pete says? How many programs can run groups of 9 plus weights coach thru and get everyone involved? It's a start I guess, but seems kind of silly.

As with everything else right now, the weight room experience will be different this summer. Schools will have to be flexible and creative with their schedule to conform to the new usage guidelines. I see schools working in hour and a half blocks. An hour to an hour and fifteen minutes for kids to lift then time to clean before the next group comes in. Depending on the number of kids participating, weight rooms could be open as little as 3 or 4 hours or up to 10 to 12 hours a day. Is any of this ideal? No, but any glimmer of normalcy is a welcome reprieve from the last 8 weeks of being shutdown and locked out.

I'd guess if it weren't for "Pete", the Dept of Ed would have said to keep them closed. Be happy they're open at all.
I am happy, and I don't doubt that. I am tired of this crap, it is totally blown out of proportion by the media. Sorry for being bitchy, we are all in the same boat.

I think you logged into the wrong forum. This is a Nebraska HS Sports forum :)

Yes, I'm tired of it because I'm ready to get to work with the boys. Was looking forward to camps and the time spent with the kids but that isn't looking very good right now.

Thought those were strange comments from Bellar. Wondering if hybrid schedules where kids come in in small groups once or twice a week and do most classes online aren't starting to get a lot of consideration in places. That might be the kind of situation where practices and games might fit the state recommendations even though school isn't in normal session?

Had discussions with a couple people who are in the middle of planning for youth baseball and softball under the June guidelines and am seeing that even those are much trickier than I assumed when first announced. Bumpy ride....

Q&A from the NSAA in regards to June 1 weightroom re-opening:

=================================

Below are a few of the most frequently asked questions after the Governor gave his okay for schools to open their weight room facilities.

Q: Are the use of gymnasiums allowed?
A: Yes, no more than 10 athletes at a time, and they must keep the 6-feet social distancing at all times.

Q: Can outdoor spaces be used for conditioning?
A: Yes, one group of ten or less students can utilize outdoor spaces for conditioning. Only one group can be outside at any given time.

Q: Can we have a group outside conditioning and in the gym at the same time?
A: Yes, limit of 10 in each group, keep social distance, and they cannot intermingle or change groups.

Q: Can we have one group of 10 lifting and another group of 10 in the gym conditioning?
A: Yes, as long as your gym and the weight room are not in the same room.

Q: We have more than one weight room, can we use both of them?
A: Yes, limit of 10 students per room.

Q: Can schools open additional temporary weight rooms to accommodate multiple groups of students?
A: No, schools are prohibited from creating additional temporary weight rooms to accommodate multiple groups of students. Schools shall only use preexisting weight rooms.

Q: Does the number of "10" include the coach?
A: No, 10 athletes plus one coach. Coaches are not required to stay with the same group of 10 athletes.

Q: Is there a number limitation for kids on our school campus?
A: That number would depend on a school's number of gyms, weight rooms, and one group of 10 outside. It will be different for all schools.

Q: Can we have a spotter when we weight lift?
A: We suggest you start with light weight, more reps. We recommend spotting while maintaining social distance. If someone needs help, by all means help.

Q: How often should we sanitize our rooms/equipment?
A: Before, during and after all workout sessions. Please read articles provided in last email.

Q: Can our dance team or cheerleaders practice?
A: No, all sport and activity practices are prohibited. All students are permitted to only participate in weight training and conditioning programs.

The NSAA is starting with the weight room and conditioning to start acclimating students back into our sports and activities, at this time, all other school-sponsored sports and activities are prohibited.

Prioritizing the health and safety of all students and staff must remain the focus of each NSAA member school. Please follow these guidelines and ask questions if you are not sure. We very much want to have a fall season, and we need to do everything in our power to make it happen.

Your assistance is not only appreciated, it is monumental in making it happen.

I am in the same position. Why does the NSAA care if you split your equipment into 2 spaces?

Only thing I can think of, is if you move equipment into random rooms...suddenly you have 10 "cardio" rooms throughout the building and 100 athletes in the building...instead of 10 outside, 10 in the gym and 10 in the weight room.

But I'm not sure that's something that's a realistic possibility, but it's the only thing I can come up with.

I fail to understand the logic behind the answer to question #6.
My guess is that when you move equipment or makeshift temporary equipment safety has to become an issue. That or they’re really trying to put a max number on students coming in at a time.

Is it even possible for a Class A school to run a competent summer S&C for all based on this? The coaches will have to obviously run in shifts through dinner time to get all girls & boys through. Does it come down to only working with the "starters" and a few backups? That might get interesting. I feel terrible for the coaches & athletes, this thing has disrupted the joy of training for their sport.

"Not the victory, but the action...."

With the further easing of health restrictions, Gov. Ricketts announced today that contact sports in the state may resume on July 1.

Also, beginning June 22, outside of Dakota, Hall, Hamilton and Merrick counties, all fans will be allowed to attend youth and school sports (previously only household members could attend) and stadium capacity will be permitted up to 75%.
