NSAA Board of Directors Meeting Minutes (May 17, 2024)

The NSAA Board of Directors met on May 17, 2024 at the Courtyard Marriott in LaVista with the following members present:

District I - Kara Graham, Lincoln Southeast​

District I - Dr. Dana Wiseman, Sutton​

District II - Thomas Lee, Omaha Westview​

District II - Dr. Nick Wemhoff, Fort Calhoun​

District III - Dr. Jon Cerny, Bancroft-Rosalie​

District IV - Darren Tobey, Broken Bow​

District V - Robert Drews, Arapahoe​

District VI - Dr. Troy Unzicker, Alliance​

Also in attendance: Dr. Zainab Rida, Nebraska Department of Education liaison; Bobby Truhe, NSAA Legal Counsel; Luke Chadwell, Activities Director - Plattsmouth High School.

The meeting was called to order at 8:00 a.m.

1. Moved to approve the Consent Agenda. Items on the Consent Agenda included:

• Approval of the meeting Agenda as presented
• Approval of the Minutes of the April 4, 2024 Board of Directors Meeting
• Approval of the Minutes of the April 5, 2024 Representative Assembly
• Approval of the Financial Statements
  
  
• Approval of the following new cooperative sponsorships for the 2024-25 and 2025-26 schools years:
  • Freeman and Lewiston for Softball
  • Norfolk, Norfolk Catholic, Lutheran High Northeast and Wayne for Boys Swimming
  • Southwest and Cambridge for Girls Wrestling
  • Beatrice and Diller-Odell for Baseball
    
• Approval of the following cooperative sponsorship renewals for the 2024-25 and 2025-26 school years:
  • Louisville and Conestoga for Softball
  • Southern and Diller-Odell for Softball
  • Grand Island and Heartland Lutheran for Boys Bowling and Girls Bowling
  • Scottsbluff and Gering for Boys Swimming and Girls Swimming
  • Beatrice and Freeman for Girls Wrestling
  • Sargent and Loup County for Girls Wrestling
  • Callaway and Arnold for Wrestling, Boys Basketball and Girls Basketball
  • Ashland-Greenwood, Yutan and Mead for Baseball

Motion Carried: 8-0

2. Moved to ratify the proposals that passed through the NSAA Legislative Process and Class Caucus. Motion Carried: 8-0

3. Moved to approve the 2024-2025 NSAA Calendar. Motion Carried: 8-0

4. Moved to establish a formal District Organization Committee, comprised of eight member schools and two members of the Board of Directors. Motion Carried: 8-0

5. The Board heard a presentation from Plattsmouth High School.

6. Moved to allow school choice for dates of Boys Basketball District Finals. Motion Carried: 8-0

7. The Board discussed the NSAA Strategic Plan timeline.

8. The Board heard the Executive Director's report. Items included an extension of the partnership with the CHI Health Center for the NSAA Wrestling Championships for the next five years, with the Girls State Wrestling Championships being held on Tuesday-Wednesday and the Boys Wrestling Championships being held on Thursday-Saturday. Both championships will be televised on Nebraska Public Media on Wednesday and Saturday, respectively.

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 9:23 a.m.

The next meting of the NSAA Board of Directors will be August 21, 2024 at the NSAA Office in Lincoln.

The "District Organization Committee" was set up in the wake of a failed proposal to add a ninth board position that would have been split off from District II (Omaha area). Districts 1 (Lincoln area) and 2 (Omaha) each have two board members, while the other four legislative districts have one member each.

With Wiseman resigning (June 30th I believe) her superintendent position at Sutton what will happen to her position on the board?
