Listened today to the Doug and Daddy Show at 1460 in Kearney NE and heard an interesting stat in regards to the number of high schools in the state of Nebraska. During an on the air interview with a respected guest he stated at one time Nebraska had over 900 high schools and today Nebraska has just over 300 high schools. I would encourage sports fans to listen to the podcast. Please go to espnsuperstation.com to listen to podcasts of the Doug and Daddy Show. The interview had more to do with the Nebraska High School Sports Hall of Fame and the many great sports stories in the state of Nebraska. This interview just reminded me of the great athletes, coaches and contributors this state has produced that make Nebraska High School sports something we should all be proud of.

That dropping to 300 does not surprise me. Iowa started this in the early sixties. I remember early ones like Raymond Central and Scribner -Snyder. So sad for all these new mascots and colors. But the HS kids today take it in stride. It's another world out there.
But my alarm will ring if it continues and I wake up to see the following schools merged,

Lincoln NE /Lincoln East
Scottsbluff/Gering
Seward/York
Columbus/Fremont
GI/Kearney
North/Central
Etc

Seward/York
Columbus/Fremont
GI/Kearney

Not sure if this is a joke but, why would those schools merge, they are not even close to each other? If anything those schools will get larger as the small schools near them close or continue to have declining enrollments.
