Douglas County West’s Russ Ninemire becomes Nebraska's winningest girls basketball coach
Douglas County West’s Russ Ninemire became Nebraska's all-time leader in girls basketball coaching wins Tuesday night.
Russ Ninemire, currently head coach at Douglas County West, picked up his 639th career victory last night in a win over Logan View/Scribner-Snyder, moving him past former Lincoln Southeast and Crete coach John Larsen, who retired in 2022 with 638 wins, to become the state's all-time winningest girls basketball coach.
Ninemire picked up the majority of his wins in a 40-year career at Sandy Creek. During that stretch from 1977 to 2017, Ninemire won 583 games and 10 state championships. While at Sandy Creek, he won 95 games in a row from 1997 to 2000. He is currently in his fifth season at DC West. He was named National Coach of the Year in 2018 and is a member of the Nebraska High School Sports Hall of Fame.
