Sooner than envisioned, all six classes are going to be using the shot clock next season.

It has only taken three seasons for it to spread from Class A only, as an "experiment," to the addition of Class B this season, to the anticipated approval from the NSAA board to expand it to the rest of the classes.

In voting earlier this month in the NSAA's six legislative districts, only District V in southwest Nebraska rejected the proposal for Classes C1, C2, D1 and D2 to employ the shot clock.

At last Thursday's monthly board meeting, NSAA Assistant Director Jon Dolliver was given the go-ahead to alert schools to what's coming because it takes time to order the clocks and get them installed, especially when more than 200 schools will need them.

The trickle down that became a gusher, I didn't see coming.

Last fall, it seemed like Class C1 and C2 schools were leaning toward it, and some legislative proposals were for those classes only. But one proposal included Classes D1 and D2, too. And, by golly, it sailed through.

The NSAA Board of Directors met on January 18, 2024 at the NSAA Office in Lincoln with the following members present:

District I - Kara Graham, Lincoln Southeast​

District II - Dr. Nick Wemhoff, Fort Calhoun​

District II - Thomas Lee, Omaha Westview​

District III - Dr. Jon Cerny, Bancroft-Rosalie​

The meeting was called to order at 8:30 a.m.

1. Moved to approve the Consent Agenda. Items on the Consent Agenda included:

- Approval of the meeting Agenda as amended​

- Approval of the Minutes of the December 6 Board of Directors Meeting​

- Approval of the Financial Statements​

- Approval of the following new cooperative sponsorships for the 2023-24 and 2024-25 school years:​

2. The Board discussed the January District Meetings and the legislative proposals.

3. Moved to approve the updated language in the NSAA Baseball Manual to clarify the definition of a doubleheader. Motion Carried: 8-0

4. The Board entered closed session at 9:02 a.m. to hear an appeal from Millard North.

5. The Board exited closed session at 9:22 a.m.

6. The Board entered closed session at 9:29 a.m. to hear an appeal from Aurora.

7. The Board exited closed session at 10:00 a.m.

8. It was moved to approve a request from Omaha Central for a waiver of Approved Ruling 3.11.1 - 3.11.13. Motion Carried: 8-0

9. The Board heard a report from the NSAA Lobbyist.

10. It was moved to enter executive session at 11:21 a.m. to review the appeal from Millard North and the appeal from Aurora. Motion Carried: 8-0

11. It was moved to exit executive session at 11:56 a.m.

12. It was moved to uphold the Interim Executive Director's denied hardship wavier for a Millard North student. Motion Carried: 7-0 (1 abstention - Lee)

13. Moved to uphold the Interim Executive Director's penalty of forfeitures by virtue of wild card penalty points for the use of an ineligible athlete by Aurora's varsity boys basketball team. Motion Carried: 5-3 (For: Graham, Wiseman, Wemhoff, Lee, Cerny | Against: Tobey, Drews, Unzicker)

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 11:57 a.m.

The next meeting of the NSAA Board of Directors will be February 14, 2024 at the NSAA Office in Lincoln.
