Just curious. Does anyone know how the number of schools competing in baseball currently compare to say 10, 20, or 30 years ago? Softball has a class C and it seems like it's really picking up in schools competing with lots of coops forming from smaller schools. Personally I'd love to see the same thing occur for baseball with some of the smaller schools.

Here is the way that I understand the past landscape of Nebraska HS baseball.

There are currently 57 programs participating in high school baseball in Nebraska. 27 programs in Class A and 30 in Class B. Class B has an enrollment range from Arlington (146 total enroll and South Sioux City 867).

In Class A the smallest enrollment school is Omaha Benson (864 – They opted up to Class A) and the largest is Grand Island (2533 they Co-op with Northwest, Grand Island CC and Heartland Lutheran).

In 1975 33 schools played districts (20 class A and 13 class B)

In 1985 25 schools entered districts (All teams played in 1 class)

In 1995 25 schools played baseball (I believe all schools played in 1 class)

In 2005 37 schools played (I believe all schools played in 1 class)

In 2016 57 programs (27 class A and 30 class B)

Still amazed at the success of girls sports at Wynot and Crofton. 17 miles away and they just reload. If they were one team, it would interesting to see how well they would do in C1.

It's like the Howells-Dodge in boys sports in the 2000's.

Howells and Dodge were very special in the 2000’s. For football; one could argue that the 30 mile stretch of NE-91, between Lindsay and Clarkson, is more impressive. Between 1997 and 2012 one, or more of these schools were part in a state championship game. I did a quick breakdown… some of the D1/D2 classifications may be off, but the years and teams should be correct.

1997 – D2 Dodge (State Champion)

1998 – D1 Humphrey St. Francis (State Runner up)

1999 – D2 Dodge (State Champion)

2000 - D1 Howells (State Champion)

2001 – D1 Howells (State Champion)

2002 – D1 Howells (State Champion) D2 Lindsay Holy Family (State Runner up)

2003 – D1 Howells (State Champion) D2 Lindsay Holy Family (State Runner up)

2004 – D1 Howells (State Champion) D2 Lindsay Holy Family (State Champion)

2005 – D1 Howells (State Champion)

2006 – D2 Dodge (State Champion)

2007 – D1 Clarkson (State Runner up)

2008 – D1 Howells (State Champion) D2 Humphrey St. Francis (State Runner up)

2009 – D1 Howells (State Champion) D2 Humphrey St. Francis (State Champion)

Oh I agree. I played against those Dodge/Howells/HSF/Clarkson teams. That Clarkson football team in 2007 was a damn good team that no one talks about.

Would love for someone to make a book or have a documentary about Highway 91 from Snyder to Lindsay from 1990-2010.

I agree completely. I believe that baseball could be such a strong sport in outstate NE, if some of the smaller schools would co-op. I could easily see 3 classes in no time at all.

What I really wish would happen is to have the NSAA and the Nebraska American Legion sit down together, and turn Legion Baseball into HS Baseball in Class C Legion. I truly believe that the numbers problems that Legion Baseball is experiencing would be fixed.

Don't forget about Dodge winning D1 in 1994, 1995, and 1996.

Yes. And the early 90's Leigh Panthers. I believe they spent some time in the top 10.

I am not from that area so I am not really a historian. I just know that stretch has had a lot of quality football squads.

When I was in high school (early 90s) we didn't have lights so we played our games at 4:00. After our games, we would pack up in a car and make the hour trip up 91 and look for lights.

We always knew that we could catch a good game.
