I had a chance to watch the CWC at Randolph game last Friday and I have some thoughts on CWC being a legit contender to watch out for:
- CWC has explosiveness. Within 15 seconds of the game starting we had a 40 yard touchdown run. By 4 minutes in CWC had a 22-0 lead and really needed to just cruise the rest of the way to victory. Big plays and fast starts quickly dig deep holes for your opponent to get out of.
- If Brendan Pelster is an offensive weapon, then he is a WMD when it comes to special teams. 100% of his kickoffs went for touchbacks. Moreover, when they finally punted for the first time, he uncorked it for 50 yards in the air and flipped the field on Randolph. Point is with Pelster, they will always win the field position battle.
- CWC is well suited to battle traditional run teams. They secure the tackle, go for the ball and most cases see at least 3 participating in the tackle. When Randolph ran out of the I they often had trouble moving the ball. As the game went on Randolph had more success by moving into a spread and leaving a full back in the backfield, taking advantage of reduced numbers in the middle of the field. Run heavy teams that don't utilize multiple sets will not matchup well. This is probably most of the reason for the victory over St. Francis and I don't see Sacred Heart or Exeter-Milligan lining up well either (feel free to correct me as it has been at least a year since I've seen those last two, but I don't recall multiple set looks)
- CWC's backfield has two running styles in it at any time. Libolt is the big play home run hitter while Pelster is the patient efficient runner that waits patiently behind his lead blockers and doesn't engage the defense until necessary.
- They look great on the field but also in the standings they are lined up well to take a 1 or 2 seed into the playoffs. They have 2 tier 1 teams left on their schedule and a tier 2. Any thoughts?
