It is district track week. Below are the district assignments and qualifying criteria for the state meets. Classes A and B will run districts on Tuesday, May 10; Classes C and D will be on Thursday, May 12.

All district host sites shall use Fully Automatic Timing (FAT) systems for district competition.

CLASS A

Date: Tuesday, May 10

- There will be four district meets.

State Qualifying Criteria

Individual Running Events

The winners of the first FOUR (4) places in each individual running event will qualify for the state meet, plus the next EIGHT (8) fastest times of the non-qualifiers, regardless of place in a finals event. There shall be a maximum of 24 qualifiers. If there is a tie for the final qualifying spot, none of those tied shall qualify. Regardless of place would mean in the individual running events with preliminaries and finals, the next 8 fastest times of the non-qualifiers would come from "finals" competition only. This means in the events with preliminaries and finals, 5th-8th place could qualify for the state track meet if their district finals time was one of the next 8 fastest times of the non-qualifiers from all districts submitted. In the individual running events that are run as "finals only," 5th-12th place could qualify for the state track meet if their district finals time was one of the next 8 fastest times of the non-qualifiers from all districts submitted.

Relay Events
The winners of the first THREE (3) places in each relay event will qualify for the state meet, plus the next FOUR (4) fastest times of the non-qualifiers, regardless of place in a finals event, with a maximum of 16 relay teams qualifying. If there is a tie for the last qualifying spot, none of those tied shall qualify. Regardless of place would mean that in RELAY events at district meets, any relay team who finished 4th-7th place in their district meet could qualify for the state track meet if their time was one of the four fastest times of non-qualifiers from all districts submitted. It would not matter what place in their respective district they finished, but that the time was one of the four fastest of the non-qualifiers.

Field Events (Long Jump, Triple Jump, Shot Put, Discus)
The first FOUR (4) places in each event shall qualify for the state meet, plus the next EIGHT (8) best performances of the non-qualifiers across all districts. In the case of a tie for the last qualifying spot, all of those tied shall qualify.

Field Events (Pole Vault, High Jump)
The first FOUR (4) places in each event shall qualify for the state meet, plus all who equal or exceed the additional qualifier mark at the 2022 NSAA Class A District Track Meet. The additional qualifier mark is determined by using the average height of the 8th place finish at the State Meet for the past three years. Athletes placing first, second, third or fourth must have cleared 9' 6" or higher to qualify in the boys pole vault and 6' 6" or higher in the girls pole vault.

Additional Automatic Qualifying Marks
Boys Pole Vault: 13' 6"
Girls Pole Vault: 10' 2"
Boys High Jump: 6' 3"
Girls High Jump: 5' 1"

In the event the FAT timing system would fail in any district in any running event, any individual running event would qualify the top six places and any relay event would qualify the top four places. This would pertain only to those events where the FAT failed. In the event of a tie for the last qualifying spot, none of those tied shall qualify in that event.

TIES
Individuals tied for the district's last state qualifying spot in races of 200 meters or less must compete for that qualifying spot in a run-off. Only the winner of the run-off will qualify for the state meet. In all other individual events those individuals tied in the district meet or in time comparisons for the state meet will not qualify unless the tied individuals ran in the same race, and one was picked ahead of the other.

In the field events, those tied for the last qualifying spot shall qualify if places cannot be determined by using tie-breaker rule for field events.

Relay teams tied for the fastest time will not qualify for the state meet. Ties in time comparison for the relay qualifiers will be broken by giving preference to the team(s) with the highest place in head-to-head competition. If the tie for qualifying still exists, those tied teams shall not qualify.

I hate how they still only have one meet to qualify for state track. Wish they would adopt the college way and have a mark that could be hit at any point in the year.
I agree! Honestly would be really easy to implement. Have specific times/distances that would make you Auto Qualify (A Standard). Then have your Provisional (B Standard) qualifying mark. Take your best attempt throughout the season and the Auto's automatically qualify and the Provisionals will qualify as long as you are ranked in the top 16-24. Auto could be the last 4-6 year average of previous 6th place finishers, with the provisional being the average of 18-20th place (just an example) of the same previous years.

I know there's been a lot of discussion in the past about weather being an issue and really aiding a performance. More times than not though I guarantee you that athlete is still capable of performing at a high level. And if that's truly the case, weather already affects performances as is. Our state is big enough that the weather in all four corners can be drastically different than the rest of the state.
Other sports have done a great job in recent years of working to get the best teams to play for a state championship; for example football going with a statewide bracket for 11 man. Reseeding for the second round for 8 man. The format now being used for volleyball and basketball for district finals. Why is track so far behind in the changing?

And I'm sure 99% of the coaches if not all would be up for this change as well. Like you said weather can play a huge factor and is totally out of an athletes control. You could have 80 degrees and sunny conditions in one part of the state and 40 degrees and rainy in another. I ran track at Doane and my junior year we had only one meet all year where it below 90 degrees so as a long jumper and sprinter I loved that. It was 105 out for our conference meet at Wesleyan the first Saturday of May. Senior year it was completely opposite, one meet where it was above 60 and conference meet at Concordia the first week of May it was 30 and sleeting.

South Dakota does it like colleges with the provisional mark thing.

I feel a little sorry for class C and D districts being tomorrow as it's supposed to be in the 90s, but pretty windy with 40-50 mph wind gusts. Too bad all their districts can't just be moved to Friday as it's looks to be a perfect day for a meet.

That'll be a good day for the 100 and 100 & 110 hurdles races and most of the 200 but everything else will be brutal fighting that much wind, and that's if it's basically a straight north or south wind.

I am working on a proposal along these exact lines that will be submitted at least for Class C in next year’s legislative process. I brought it up on a Class C AD’s meeting last year and most seemed pretty open to it. Coaches I’ve spoken with are also open to at least having the conversation officially, knowing it might have to go through some revisions before it gets passed.

I was trying to find how the NAIA comes up with their qualifying standards but I couldn't find that anywhere

I would assume that only meets with FAT would count, correct?

And I would also ask, how would you handle wind for the sprints and horizontal jumps? I would assume a wind measurement would be required and a threshhold not exceeded for a qualifying mark to be considered.
