Track is probably my favorite sport. Was disappointing to see the entire season wiped out last year. With the season starting this week, here is a listing of the state records athletes will be chasing in 2021

Who in the state has a chance at breaking a state record this year? A couple that come to mind for me who lost the opportunity last year was Sara Riefenrath from Hartington Cedar Catholic in the 100, 200, and 400 and Kaylen Meyer from Superior in the discuss.

We should have had a girl 6' high jumper by now. Still waiting. Maybe Porter and Lind were just way ahead of their time?

Pretty crazy to think there has only been one 50' triple jump in the history of the state and it was 43 years ago. Not even a 49' jump yet either. Would have loved to see some video of Todd Brown jumping. The girls discus record is pretty impressive too. Girl from class C has a 20' lead on the next highest throw.

Kaylen Meyer had a throw of 176'8 at the 2019 state meet in Class C That was tops in the country for the year. The Nebraska volleyball player lost the opportunity to compete in her senior season last year.

Good info. I was wondering what the next closest throw was

Uher made that throw at Tri County on a hill with a stiff wind. All six of her throws that day were over 170'. She considered that throw more a result of the circumstances and considered 155' thrown in more circumstances as her personal best. She won state with a 145' throw as a junior, the same year as the record throw.

As the story goes there were all kinds of PR's that day at Tri County. Former WSC teammate of mine Lindsay Stockwell also threw an all-time top 10 mark that day at 157' (if memory serves me correctly).

Tom Haase of Aurora long jumped 24 6.5 which was all time all class record at the time. He should be listed as Class B leader.

not sure, just know it was regarded as the state record at the time and up until it was broken many years later. I don't recall anything about it being wind aided.

FAT?

Any idea of when the state started recognizing records not set at the state meet?

FAT?

Any idea of when the state started recognizing records not set at the state meet?

Fully Automatic Timing.

Not sure when they started that. The requirements to submit a mark as an official state record are:

1) Track event must be conducted at metric distance
2) Performance will only be considered from meets involving four or more schools being run under NFHS/NSAA rules
3) Performance must be certified on an NSAA record application form

I should note, upon further research, hand-held times may be submitted if they are converted to FAT standards. From the application form:

* ONLY fully automatic times (FAT) or manual times, with the differential equation included, will be considered for state records. Hand-held times shall be rounded up to the slower 1/10th of a second before adding the conversion factor of .24 seconds (i.e. MT+.24 = FAT).

So, if an athlete runs a hand-held time of 10.81 in the 100 meters, that time is rounded up to 10.9 and then +.24 is added on for a new converted time of 11.14.

Also any track event that is less than one full lap around the track and for the long jump and triple jump, the wind must remain below 4.474 miles per hour (2 meters per second) at all times during the performance, with a wind measurement taken using an anemometer.

Thank you Almu-ni for all that you do on here.

Let's look at the class B 200 meter record in 1961. Kent McCloughan was a man amongst boys, literally. He turned 21 in Feb before setting the record in May. Is there a conversion table for that?

What you say fits with McCloughan's Wikipedia birthdate, but doesn't jibe with NSAA rules at the time as I understand them. Is there a story behind this? In 1928 the state (called NHSAA then) ruled a student was eligible until his 20th birthday. If that happened in the season, he was done. In 1951, track eligibility was open to anyone who hadn't turned 19 on March 31st of that year. In 1953, eligibility for all sports was limited to those turning 19 only after Sept 1 of the school year. Now the cut-off is, what, not-19 by August 1? I can't imagine the age ever went up in that gap between 1953 and now. How was McCloughan eligible? Is his birthdate listed incorrectly?

Looks like Stu covered this when OWH did their top 100 athletes.

"Sorting out fact from fable. Even the official NFL website has it wrong — No. 34 Kent McCloughan was not born in 1940. He was a 1943 baby. Several readers had wondered, with a 1940 birthdate, how he could have been competing in high school sports in 1961."

The 1940 date is still all over the Internet.

Brady Koolen of Lincoln Southeast with the first state record of the 2021 season. At the Lincoln Public Schools Championships he set a mark of 16' 4.25" in the pole vault, which is a new Class A state record.

It breaks the old mark of 16' 3.25" set by Steven Cahoy of Grand Island in 2013.

The all-class state record remains at 16' 7.25" set by Tyce Hruza of Gothenburg in 2019.

Don't know how I missed this one, but Arlington's Kailynn Gubbels tied the Class B state record in the high jump on May 1 at the Capitol Conference track meet by clearing 5' 10".

The mark ties the record set in both 1980 and 1981 by Sue Lind of Albion. Gubbels is one inch off the all-class state record of 5' 11" set by Meredy Porter of Bellevue West in 1987.

Arlington's Kailynn Gubbels, less than a week after tying the state record in the Class B girls high jump has now tentatively set a new Class B record in the girls 100 meter high hurdles at her home invite with a time of 14.75

If the mark holds up (a wind measurement needs to be verified) it would break the old Class B record of 14.78 set by Julianna Burr of Holdrege in 2014.

The All-Class record remains 13.87 set by LaQue Moen-Davis of Omaha North in 2011.

The original post above has been updated following the conclusion of the 2021 Track & Field season. The following state records were established in 2021:

BOYS

3,200 meters / Class C

Carson Noecker of Hartington Cedar Catholic ran a 9:24.56 to set a new Class C state record, breaking the old record of 9:24.88 set by Dale Mackel of Elgin Pope John in 1982.

Pole Vault / Class A
Brady Koolen of Lincoln Southeast set a new Class A state record with a vault of 16' 4.25", breaking the old record of 16' 3.25" set by Steven Cahoy of Grand Island in 2013.

================================

GIRLS

100 Hurdles / Class B

Kailynn Gubbels of Arlington ran a 14.59 to set a new Class B state record, breaking the old mark of 14.78 set by Julianna Burr of Holdrege in 2014.

4x100 Relay / Class B
Blair set a new Class B state record of 48.75 in the 4x100 relay, breaking the old record of 48.95 set by Mitchell in 1998. Members of the record-setting Blair relay team were Abby Osborn, Reese Beemer, Erika Roehrs and Grace Galbraith.

High Jump / Class B
Kailynn Gubbels of Arlington tied the Class B state record in the high jump with a leap of 5' 10". That mark equals the record of 5' 10" set by Sue Lind of Albion who accomplished that feat in both 1980 and 1981.

One of the data projects I have tried to start a couple of times is the history of each record. I think data on how long records lasted is valuable. I've been stymied a bit by some of the things you see above and more. Not only are all-time best lists different from state records because of wind and timing method, but there were eras in Nebraska where a state record could only be set at state (now we have a different set of state-meet records that diverged from the state records). I think (THINK) there was also an era where state records were allowed to be set at districts, before the current era described in the rules above. I am not certain there weren't other steps Nebraska went thru before the rules on records (and track itself) became more standardized. Even the shape and distance of tracks took quite a while to spread throughout the state. Anyone have any nuggets of wisdom on this multi-faceted problem?
