This is great to see. I had to look it up. I didn't realize that Winnebago no longer played in Nebraska. I remember them struggling with participation and opting down to 8 man when they were dominating C-1 in Basketball.

I did a little research, and this is really a cool thing that they are doing up North. It kind of makes me wonder...why don't the Parochial Schools do something like this in Nebraska. Just make their own conference and have their own playoff format? It wouldn't require a whole lot of schools to put something like that together.

I have never sat and put pen to paper to analyze how many times Parochial schools dominate the postseason in all the sports? Has anyone ever done that? Life for football this season... just a fast snap shot of semifinals it appears we have 3 schools left Skutt, Norfolk Catholic, and Parkview. Is that normal/abnormal? We just had 3 in the finals for VB (correct?)? Normal/Abnormal? Probably should start its own thread. Sorry.

I would guess that to be abnormally low.

There is so much debate over ways to balance the playing field between public and parochial, perhaps the idea of having a parochial division (where applicable) is a good option.

It might be. Wish I was smart enough to spreadsheet all that information up! LOL!

Why would they want to?

They have this in Texas. It's called TAPPS (Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools). They play against each other. Nebraska probably doesn't have enough parochial schools to make this viable as you'd have numbers from Creighton Prep to say Falls City Sacred Heart. You'd have to have classes and those classes would be extremely small.

I believe private school make up 16% of all schools in those classes but someone might check that
That being said
They make up
25% of the football titles
49% of the VB titles
40% of the Boys BB titles
29% of the Girls BB titles

What do you think is the reason for this statistic? (I have not fact checked, but am taking you at your word)

many but I am not diving down that rabbit hole, if the state wants to change or try something different the public schools hold the power and can, but at this point it doesnt seem to be a problem to them.

They'd get drug around on here for opting down, that's what would happen ;)
Exactly. There'd be a 5 page thread driven by someone that's pissed because their team lost to Winnebago (post season ineligible) which put them at 33rd in Wildcard points and a trip to the State Playoffs (which really isn't the Playoffs but rather a 9th game that only the top 32 get to play).

You're spot on! That's exactly what would happen.

The two best factors for predicting high school success in Nebraska in team sports are tradition (past success in the previous 5-10 years) and low poverty levels. Enrollment position in the classification (high, medium, low) is not a very good predictor of success.

So, would they be able to compete in D1 or D2 or are they playing at a level now to have success and have a higher participation rate? Either way, schools have to make decisions that are in the kid's best interest.

A historical parallel would be the old Gridiron Conference formed by schools that were too big for 8-man playoffs but too small to feel they could play 11-man. School folks should make more decisions like this.
I knew nothing about this! Nice.

Did the teams in the Gridiron Conference actually play each other in the regular season or was that just a playoff-type thing?

This conference is a distant memory for me but I think they played mostly playoff eligible teams during the regular season and then had a playoff system for the teams that were ineligible for the the NSAA playoffs. It appears there were generally about 10-12 teams in this conference. Here is what I have for the Gridiron Conference championship games.

1993: Sargent 42 Fairmont/Exeter 26
1994: Elm Creek 30 Newman Grove 22
1995: Callaway 42 Johnson Brock 27
1996: Wauneta/Palisade 56 Elm Creek 37
1997: Callaway 62 Chappell 14
1998: Elm Creek 14 Johnson Brock 6

Back then teams played the schools that were in their conference and played 1 or 2 out of conference games. The Gridiron Conference was for ineligible schools and they had their own playoff.

I truly think we as communities/states would be better off if more schools made athletic decisions/organizations that were not centralized and run by the NSAA.

This has been talked about before, but schools submit & vote on proposals. The NSAA doesn't make them up & install them.

I'd just say I'd applaud Winnebego - They say a problem that was not going to be fixed by the NSAA, because the vast majority of the membership just didn't care. So they set up their own solution with schools with the same issues, and are finding success away from/out of the NSAA in football.

Maybe he is saying we need more small organizations of like schools, rather than one big organization of all schools. However, I think both the Gridiron Conference and Winnebago/Omaha Nations solutions can exist inside of the NSAA umbrella.

Maybe he is saying we need more small organizations of like schools, rather than one big organization of all schools. However, I think both the Gridiron Conference and Winnebago/Omaha Nations solutions can exist inside of the NSAA umbrella.
Agree. All depends on district sizes, which will determine the freedom teams have to schedule other games. You see it in A with the poor-performing teams scheduling each other for non-district games, and I think it gives those students a sense of hope that they can accomplish something positive during the season.
