So I took a look at the "What if" scenario for a 16 team D-1 bracket. I don't know if this year would be an anomaly or not, but it sets up real well. All of the 10 district champions would be represented, plus there would be no regular season rematches. There would be some very good first round games. In my opinion another thing it eliminates is either the West or East bracket being more difficult. Last year I though the West really loaded, while this year the East appears to be the tougher bracket. Here is what the bracket would look like:

#1 BDS (8-0)
#16 Clearwater-Orchard (5-3)

#9 Lourdes Central Catholic (7-1)
#8 Burwell (7-1)

#5 Amherst (8-0)
#12 Clarkson-Leigh (7-1)

#13 Elgin Public/Pope John (6-2)
#4 Guardian Angels CC (8-0)

#3 East Butler ((8-0)
#14 Pender (6-2)

#11 Blue Hill (6-2)
#6 Perkins County (8-0)

#7 Hemmingford (7-1)
#10 High Plains (6-2)

#2 Creighton (8-0)
#15 Neligh-Oakdale (6-2)

First Five Out:
Diller-Odell (6-2)
Ansley-Litchfield (4-4)
Arapahoe (4-4)
Dundy County Stratton (4-4)
Howells-Dodge (3-5)

That makes all the sense in the world BUT think of the revenue that the NSAA would lose out on...And think of all the kids that make the playoffs and then get beat by 40, but they made the playoffs. People talk ablout making the playoffs and think an accomplishment in 8 man. Lets compare State Basketball only 8 teams go per class. Tell me when the last 9-16 seed in football won a state title.
Enjoy the games, this is the BEST time of the year and good luck to all coaches and athletes! Remember only 1 team ends the year with a W!

Terrible basketball comparison, every is in the playoffs for basketball once district play starts

Looks good to me. How it should be IMO.

Also I don't consider basketball subdistricts "playoffs like football." I don't know a lot of people who consider it that either. The district final? Sure I guess, but the only thing that matters is the state tournament.

U do realize that sub districts/ districts are sanctioned through the NSAA. So that is a state tournament. They set the admission price just like they do the playoffs. So yes, subs & districts are exactly like the playoffs.

Yes I understand that, but it doesn't feel like a playoff game. Seeing a 18-4 #1 seed beat a 4-18 #4 seed isn't a playoff game. It's a tune up.

According to the bracket above, Bloomfield would not have made the playoffs in a 16 team bracket but Lourdes Central Catholic would have. Bloomfield beat the snot out of them last night. Hard to argue that Bloomfield doesn't belong in the playoffs and Lourdes does.

I'm all for not calling the round of 32 the playoffs, but I think they should have a round of 32. Call it sub-state or call it a qualifying round.

Why does everyone bash the NSAA all the time?? Especially being money hungry...If you dislike what they do all the time then start comparing them to other states...Do you guys even know the percentage the NSAA takes in? What they use it for? Maybe get some facts before you always speak badly about what represents High School sports...And no I don't work for the NSAA or have anything to do with them besides being a teacher...

and to add to that the NSAA does not decide how many get in playoffs the schools decide all and I mean all bylaws and everything, the NSAA just follows what is voted on, so when you blame. Blame your own school.

I don't mind 32 teams in the playoffs, but I think the best for all parties is to have 24 teams. Teams that are 6-2 or 7-1 are most likely to get in. Give the top 4 seeds a bye in East & West, make the regular season actually mean something by giving the top teams a bye. First two rounds the home team has the home field advantage and after that go back to the original playoff format. I think you would have much closer contests in those early rounds. Even going to 4 divisions instead of 3 would also help improve things as well.

Why not just change the name of first round to Qualifiers or Sub state

Why not just have 24 teams instead of 32?

In my opinion 24 could work. The big negative to some coaches would be the bye week.
What's wrong with 32 and calling the first round sub-state? I prefer the 32 teams, and call it the qualifying round, and then re-seed after that round.

I know injuries can stack up, especially in 8 man, maybe that week off would be beneficial? I agree some coaches may not want a bye.

I just think 32 is watering down the product.

Norfolk Catholic is up 42-0 at half. 16 team bracket doesn't stop the blowouts. 32 might water it down, but at least nobody is left out that deserves to be there.

If 8 man goes to 16 teams, I hope they are smart enough to not give automatic bids to the district champions. Top 16 in power points is who it should be.

I like the idea of playing the first round and calling it the qualifying round. Then reseed the teams across the state and call it state playoffs. That would give teams that are peaking a chance to play to get in. A team would never get left out that should be in the playoffs

Considering that we're talking about high school football. I say just let the kids play and keep it at 32 teams.

Agree with you on all points runningback 43. What people aren't realizing is there will always be some blowouts (won't ever stop that), because the first round pits the top teams with the lower teams no matter how many get in. The odds are that a #1 vs #16 or #2 vs #15 in any sport is generally going to be a lopsided score. Totally agree if they do go down, you can't keep the district champs as automatic qualifiers or you've solved nothing. Call it sub state, districts or whatever you want, but prime example in D1 this year is Bloomfield. 16 team bracket and they don't qualify this year, yet the #12 totally dismantled #5. No system will ever be without flaws. Just my opinion.
