C2 Wilber Defense with a total dominate performance

Have not heard much on this but holding a team to less than 50 yards in a state title game has to be one of the most dominate and lop sided games in C2 history
Wakefield held Blue Hill to 39 yards of total offense in 2006 state title game on their way to a 34 to 7 victory. The only score came when Blue Hill got a scoop and score against the Wakefield Junior Varsity. I will say watching the Wilber/Crofton game, I did think exactly that though, that this had to be the most dominate defensive performance since that 2006 game. Had Wilber not stalled twice in the first half they would have had a similar score. My hats off to Wilber, excellent ball club and fun to watch.

Good defenses by both teams. Wilber was for real and I couldn't believe the talk that they weren't, their defense is just too good. C2, to me, is the most uniquely similar class in the state. A lot of similar teams. Wilber clatonia beats every team the same way by essentially the same amount. Congrats to both teams on a great season, especially the champs.

I had a similar take away from that game for Wilber too. In each of their playoff games their defense was dominant and the offense would eventually get points on the board. Someone had told me that going into the 4th quarter, Crofton only had 31 yards on 31 plays?! Defense prevails yet again!

I think a lot of people thought maybe Wilber wasn't for real because of their schedule obviously, but they ended up beating 3 teams from that loaded district which is pretty impressive! Congrats to both programs that made it to Lincoln.

Wilber is fortunate that they dropped to C2, they would not have contended for a title in C1 this year and had the opportunity for their first state title. Hats off to them for doing so, there kids rose to the occasion and got it done. They had been prepared against solid opponents in the past that was able to help them. They do not have the athletes to compete with o'neill, neumann, wahoo public and DCA. Look at another example of dropping down is Neligh Oakdale, dropped down with some talent and were arguably the best D1 team.

I disagree with this post 100%. Year in and year out the top teams in C2 can play with the top teams in C1. Just like the top teams in B can play with the top teams in A. Elkhorn went up to A for 2 cycles and went to the semis one year and the quarters another. Aquinas won C2 last year and lost to Scotus (who won C1) by like 3 points.

Wilber was very one dimensional on offense and were able to physically overwhelm their opponents, they would not do that to top levels in C1, with the same kids on the line the year before they were completely dominated by Columbus Scotus, in a game that could have been far worse than the 42-7 score. You reference DCA, which is in a whole different category, as they have completely dominated C2 for years and are able to compete very well at C1 level. Your Elkhorn reference makes my argument, go up a level and be able to make playoffs, but no way win a championship.

Wilber was a great C2 team this year, but I don't think they'd be able to hang with those top tier teams like Neumann and O'Neill for an entire game. Just not the same athletes like those top C1 teams. Scotus dominated them last year. It would have been interesting to see Wilber play one those top C1 teams to see how they did though. As mentioned above, Wilber dropped down to C2 which was beneficial, but to their credit they took care of business and won a title. Definitely no gimme on any level when you drop down a class and bring back some experience/talent.

I will agree to disagree. I don't think there is much of a difference between physicality in C1/C2. I think the difference is in depth and talent at the skill positions. In my opinion Wilber would have been able to compete in C1 at a very high level. Aquinas went up and lost to the eventual state champions on what is probably the play of the decade (if not the century) in Nebraska HS football. As mentioned before, Elkhorn went up to A a few years back and lost to eventual state champ Millard South for what I think was their only two losses. In one of those losses the game was tied and Elkhorn was lined up to kick a 20 yard FG....Trey Sachs blocked the kick and housed it on the final play of the game.

Elkhorn and Wilber-Clatonia make their living on physical football. They don't care if the other team knows the play. They don't rely on skill, they rely on physicality and execution. I'm not at all saying that Wilber-Clatonia was the best team in C1 or C2. I'm simply saying that their style of game wins at any level. I wouldn't have been surprised at all if they would have stayed C1 and won it.

you are using a bad analogy with DCA, They played Scotus tough and Wilber was destroyed by that same Scotus team. DCA and Wilber are very different programs. The Wilber team that lost to Scotus was better from a skill point and could not compete at the upper levels of C1, They are a great C2 team, but as I said before if they did not drop down they would not have a state title. They have always been close to the line of dropping to C2 and when they did they took care of business.
