Has anyone seen who the two wild card winners are in each class?
I don't really pay attention to Class A, but for Class B we won't know until after today. Right now Class B looks like Central City and Bennington would be the WC's but that could change depending on today's results.

edit: I just glanced at Class A, wow no upsets in Districts? I guess that makes Westside and Kearney the WC's?

I believe the wildcard selections in A might also be affected by what happens in B today

They won’t know for sure until the B1 through B4 finals are played tonight.

I haven't looked at Class A, but here is where Class B stands so far:

B1 Final: Norris vs Adams Central
B2 Final: Skutt Catholic vs Waverly
B3 Final: Hastings vs Elkhorn
B4 Final: Elkhorn North vs Malcolm
B5: Gross Catholic(Champs)
B6: Beatrice(Champs)

Class B WC standings:
  • Omaha Skutt Catholic (18-5), 44.4783
  • Norris (19-6), 44.4400
  • Central City/Fullerton/Centura (20-2), 43.5909
  • Elkhorn North (18-10), 43.2857
  • Bennington (15-6), 43.2857
  • Beatrice (17-4), 43.2381
  • Platte Valley (18-6), 43.1250
  • Omaha Gross Catholic (18-7), 42.9200
  • Malcolm (14-5), 42.2632
  • Elkhorn (14-13), 41.6667
  • Platteview (13-8), 41.4762
  • Adams Central (11-6), 41.2941
  • Nebraska City (10-11), 41.0000
  • Lincoln Christian (13-6), 40.7368
  • Waverly (12-13), 40.7200
  • Mount Michael Benedictine (12-12), 40.6250
  • Wahoo/Bishop Neumann/Lincoln Lutheran (10-14), 40.4583
  • Omaha Roncalli Catholic (10-13), 40.2609
  • Hastings (10-13), 40.2609
  • Wayne (13-7), 40.0500

  • Blair (8-10), 39.7222
  • Arlington (9-13), 39.0909
  • Crete (8-13), 38.8571
  • GACC-SS-WPB (5-9), 38.2143
  • Seward (6-17), 38.0000
  • Auburn (5-12), 37.6471
  • Raymond Central (6-9), 37.4000
  • Douglas County West (5-12), 37.2353
  • Fairbury (3-10), 37.1538
  • Fort Calhoun (5-15), 37.0500

  • Maxwell-St. Pat's (3-8), 36.5455
  • Falls City (3-13), 36.4375
  • South Sioux City (3-16), 35.7895
  • Thurston-Cuming County (1-14), 34.6000
  • Twin River (1-14), 34.2000
Red: Eliminated from district play
Green: District champs/clinched state berth

So, if everything stays chalk after tonight, it looks like the wild cards would be Central City/Fullerton/Centura and Bennington? Not sure if there are any scenarios where Platte Valley would get in over Bennington.

I suppose Norris/Skutt will be the popular picks (as usual) but I think Class B is wide open. There are 6ish teams that I think are all in the hunt. Elkhorn is interesting as well if they win today. It always comes down to pitching depth this time of year.

Class B is fascinating. I don't think there's a dominant team, but there's a bunch of really good teams... and who is playing better than Elkhorn right now?

Central City is an interesting study. They have created a scheduling model where they don't really see any of the top teams in Class B and it puts them in a position to get a wildcard no matter what.

Have any of those "top teams" reached out to schedule home & aways? We know how much the metro likes to travel west on I-80.

I agree - Norris probably has the most depth on the mound but I wouldn't say the most dominate. Should be a fun tournament to follow. One other interesting piece of info for this state tourney this year - Class A will definitely benefit from playing their first round games on Friday, then getting 2 days of rest for their pitchers.

They played some lower-division A teams like Omaha South, Omaha North and Lincoln High (canceled) and those wins come with bonus points and were worth 46. They beat Lincoln Christian and had their game with Norris canceled. I'd be more curious did they attempt to schedule the better B schools knowing they had a solid team and got turned down? They came to Omaha to play OPS schools. Did they attempt to play Kearney or Grand Island? All I'm saying is they really have been able to put together solid records the last two years without having to see any of the top teams in Class B. It's an outlier in the state tournament field.

Scheduling for schools outside of Omaha and Lincoln tends to be more difficult, especially for those viewed as "western." Central City/Fullerton/Centura is a relatively new team and has only had baseball for five or six years and Centura has been newly added to their Co-op. Their schedule does not appear to be much different than that of Beatrice with the exception that they were able to get their Norris game in and play Waverly and Elkhorn North. Their schedule also compares to that of Wayne, Seward, and others their size that have had baseball for a while. The Class B tournament has been dominated by teams around Omaha and Lincoln for years with the exception of being joined by Hastings (2), Beatrice (2), and now Central City/Fullerton/Centura (2). Obviously the best players in the state tend to be from the Omaha and Lincoln area, but Beatrice will enter the tournament with one of the best pitchers in the state and Central City/Fullerton/Centura enters the tournament with a returning super-state player. It is good for baseball in this state to see quality teams developing outside of the metro areas. Adams Central, Hastings, Malcolm, and Platte Valley made District finals and they are all outside of the metro areas.

It's not hard to figure out you get 46 points for beating Omaha North and 36 points for losing to Elkhorn North. There's way too much benefit for playing bad Class A teams, needs to be fixed.

This year A teams get 2 extra points for playing A teams. What will they do next year adding a class? Will both A and B get extra points for playing teams in their class? That would mean if a B team beats an A team, then they would get 4 extra points? Also, next year's state tourney format will be interesting - following the CWS format.

Would just like to add my 2 cents on this situation….the “top teams” in the Metro and Lincoln area very rarely travel for games - not necessarily because they don’t want to but because they don’t have to. The lower division teams in those areas will travel for games because that’s an opportunity for them to get away from the top teams and get a win.

Central City came to play. Impressive wins over Norris and Elkhorn. Props to them and what they proved.
I was just being sarcastic. Both teams played good schedules, it's just the point said by others that scheduling isn't that easy for out state teams. And, as we know, on any given day, a team can win at state. There are no "bad" teams there.
