Can some one explain what is MUDECAS. It si not a conference but yet you must pay a membership. what is it and why is it
One of my favorite weeks of the year is here, MUDECAS week. If you’re a fan of Nebraska high school hoops and you’ve never been, you really should make it a priority to go. Championship Friday and Saturday tops off a great week of ball. I did a quick check last night and over the last 10 years, it has produced 10 state champs on the boys side. In 2023, it produced 3 eventual state champions and one semi-finalist. And to top it all off it takes place in the venerable Beatrice Auditorium.![]()
its just a conference in term of these tournaments because most of these teams are in different conferences anf have tournaments for them also Just always found it strange and never knew anything about it Thanks for the answerIt’s a conference of 16 schools across southeast Nebraska. It is the oldest running regular season tournament in Nebraska, now entering its 96th(?) year. It is reportedly also the longest running high school basketball tournament west of the Mississippi.
As far as its origins and why, I’m not sure. Hopefully someone else on here is a better historian than I am. I do know MUDECAS stands for MUsic, DEClamation (speech), and AthleticS. There is a volleyball tournament, basketball tournament, speech tournament, and track meet. There might also be a quiz bowl. The basketball tournament is put on by the Kiwanis club in Beatrice, so maybe that’s where it originated from.
Looks to be by recordHow do they split the teams up into Division A and B for this tournament?
Organized in 1926 as more of a sports association than a conference. Usually, that meant no regular season scheduling required, but in this case, it was mainly because the non-athletic purposes were foremost in the minds of most.
It stands for MUsic- DEClaration-Athletics Society
It originally involved schools in these counties: Nemaha, Cass, Gage, Johnson, Lancaster, and Otoe. I think the geographic boundaries have been widened, but I am not sure.
The first event I know of was MUDECAS Track on May 4, 1927. Adams won and Syracuse was the runner-up.
Thanks for clarifying that. I wondered how it was determined, because I knew it wasn’t solely wildcard points.Coaches gather on a zoom call and discuss their records/opponents then they vote. Take that vote average for the seeding of the tournament.
That's a great way to do it.Coaches gather on a zoom call and discuss their records/opponents then they vote. Take that vote average for the seeding of the tournament.
Infrastructure and time. It takes a lot to put on a quality stream. JCC striv broadcasts the championship games on Friday and Saturday. It is quite a production and they do a great job, but that would be a huge commitment to do it all week. The boys A Division winners bracket round on Thursday will be some great games. Why don't they stream the first rounds?
That makes sense. Wish I could make it Thursday to watch in person.Infrastructure and time. It takes a lot to put on a quality stream.
