District Basketball Finals

Just curious, how do the classifications in Kansas work? There are 6 classes, but up until this year 4A and 1A each had 2 sub-divisions. So there were actually 8 state tournament classifications. This year, there is only 6. Did they downsize?
Also, I hate to be cynical, but as long as people come to Lincoln to watch D2 basketball, there is going to be 6 classes in Nebraska. Economics plays a large role in how many classes there are. The Nebraska State tournaments are well attended events. I’m not sure if that’s the case with the different classes in different communities format that many of our surrounding states use.
I've just done some light reading on the KSHSAA website and you are correct, they use to split 4A and 1A into two separate divisions(a total of 8), and that this year they changed it and now they just have 6 classes, with no divisions.

You're exactly right about the economics side of things!

None of this has been about comparing the quality of basketball to surrounding states. Just they way they conduct their state tournaments. And you're correct that would be a mistake in doing so.
The debate over less or more classes will always continue, yes I think less would be better but it really comes down to what the schools want and right now less classes will never fly. I just get a kick out of those who complain about district format and what most dont realize its way way more easier to get to state in Nebraska than about 35 or more other states

I don't think you can go by records when it comes to D2. My boys plays at a D2 school that half their schedule is against D1 teams and we are a 500 team. Play more D2 teams and their record may be better. I looked at some local D1 schedules and they only play up a class for 3 or 4 games a season and they play a lot of D2 teams. My opinion is they need to get rid of the last game of the season on Friday and start the subs on Saturday and play the following Monday and Tuesday. Gives teams at least three days to get ready for the sub state game.

Initially when I saw this post, I couldn't have agreed more! I was in complete agreement with everything here.

Ironically, the Class D2 Boys State Tournament field consists of the top 8 teams in Power Points...meaning that the regular season record was as good of an indicator as seeding District Finals.

Class D1 had 3 teams outside the top 8 that made it. Class D1 was the only team with any real surprises with Lourdes knocking off #2 Overton.

I'm a huge fan of substate. It's just amazing to me how poor D2 hoops has become. Too many schools or have one Class D in my opinion.
One thing about the D-2 teams is they can't play teams in a class below. So the poor teams look really, really poor and even some mediocre teams look poor by having to face teams from classes above them.

I haven't seen any D-2 basketball this year, but can see what you mean by looking at the records on the NSAA site. Once you get past the top +/- 10, you are into teams that are basically .500 teams. That is quite alarming in terms of what that MIGHT mean for the classes above D-2.

With that said, I believe the top end of the class is pretty solid! Actually, very solid!

Agree completely. A point I forgot to put in my previous post was that even the bottom teams in NCAA Division 1 have to play somebody. And their wins come against teams in the lower divisions. The Delaware St.'s, Incarnate Words and Mississipi Valley St's have wins over schools I've never heard of...Coker, Elizabeth, RUST? Always remember that there will always be teams with lots of wins...and lots of losses.
