Meeting Minutes
The NSAA Board of Directors met on January 25, 2023 at the NSAA Office in Lincoln with the following members present:
District I - Kara Graham, Lincoln Southeast
District I - Dr. Dana Wiseman, Sutton
District II - Dr. Bob Reznicek, Boys Town
District II - Thomas Lee, Omaha Westview
District III - Dr. Jon Cerny, Bancroft-Rosalie
District IV - Ryan Ruhl, Centura
District V - Robert Drews, Arapahoe
District VI - Dr. Troy Unzicker, Alliance
Also in attendance were: Kim Snyder, Nebraska Department of Education liaison; Bobby Truhe, NSAA Legal Counsel; and Julia Plucker, NSAA Lobbyist
The meeting was called to order at 8:30 a.m.
1. It was moved to approve the Consent Agenda. Items on the Consent Agenda included: the approval of the meeting Agenda as presented, approval of the Minutes of the December 7, 2022 NSAA Board of Directors Meeting, approval of the Financial Statements;
Approval of the following new cooperative sponsorships for the 2022-23 and 2023-24 school years:
- Omaha Gross and Cornerstone Christian for Baseball
Approval of the following cooperative sponsorship renewals for the 2022-23 and 2023-24 school years:
- Lincoln Lutheran and Raymond Central for Boys Soccer and Girls Soccer
Approval of the following cooperative sponsorship renewals for the 2023-24 and 2024-25 school years:
- Fillmore Central, Exeter-Milligan and Friend for Softball
Motion Carried: 8-0
2. The Board discussed the Legislative Proposals from the January District Meetings.
3. The Board heard presentations from the following communities on the NSAA Girls Golf Championships: Scottsbluff/Gering, North Platte, Kearney, Grand Island, Columbus and Nebraska City.
4. Moved to approve the 2022-23 enrollment numbers from the Nebraska Department of Education.
Motion Carried: 8-0
5. Moved to include all out-of-state opponents in the wildcard point system for all wildcard sports beginning with the 2023-24 school year.
Motion Carried: 8-0
6. Kim Snyder led the Board in a discussion about the book "8 Ways to Support Diversity, Equity and Inclusion for All."
7. Moved to approve Creighton Prep High School's request to opt-up in Journalism for the 2022-23 school year.
Motion Carried: 8-0
8. Moved that effective immediately, the eligibility of foreign exchange students must be in the district of the host family unless permission is granted by the NSAA Executive Director through a hardship waiver.
Motion Carried: 7-1 (Unzicker Against)
9. Moved to award the Class A NSAA Girls Golf Championship to Grand Island, Class B NSAA Girls Golf Championship to Scottsbluff/Gering and Class C NSAA Girls Golf Championship to North Platte for the 2023-24, 2024-25, 2025-26, and 2026-27 school years.
Motion Carried: 8-0
10. The Board heard a report from the NSAA Lobbyist.
11. Moved to enter into executive session at 2:22 p.m. to discuss potential litigation and to protect the public interest and to prevent the needless injury to the reputation of an individual(s).
Motion Carried: 8-0
12. Moved to exit executive session at 3:17 p.m.
Motion Carried: 8-0
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 3:19 p.m.
The next meeting of the NSAA Board of Directors will be February 15, 2023 at the NSAA Office in Lincoln immediately following the Legislative Commission.
