The NSAA Board of Directors met on Thursday, October 10, 2024 at the NSAA Office in Lincoln with the following members present:

District I - Kara Graham, Lincoln Southeast​
District I - Dade McDonald, McCool Junction​
District II - Dr. Nick Wemhoff, Fort Calhoun​
District II - Thomas Lee, Omaha Westview (absent)​
District III - Dr. Jon Cerny, Bancroft-Rosalie​
District IV - Darren Tobey, Broken Bow​
District V - Robert Drews, Arapahoe​
District VI - Dr. Troy Unzicker, Alliance​
Also in attendance: Bobby Truhe, NSAA Legal Counsel; Dave Hoxworth, Scottsbluff Activities Director; Eugene Hanks, Crawford Superintendent; Michael Baker, Alliance Activities Director; Eden Coppersmith, Paxton Student; and Cordell Frerichs, South Platte Student / NSAA Student Advisory Committee Member.

The Meeting was called to order at 8:00 a.m.

1. Moved to approve the Consent Agenda. Items on the Consent Agenda included:
  • Approval of the Agenda as presented
  • Approval of the Minutes of the September 19, 2024 Board of Directors meeting
  • Approval of the Minutes of the September 30, 2024 District Boundary Review Committee meeting
  • Approval of the Financial Statements

  • Approval of the following new cooperative sponsorships for the 2024-25 and 2025-26 school years:
    • Humphrey and Lindsay Academy for Boys Bowling, Girls Bowling and Speech
    • Norfolk Catholic and Lutheran High Northeast for Girls Wrestling
    • Omaha Concordia and Omaha Mercy for Girls Wrestling
    • Blue Hill and Red Cloud for Girls Wrestling
    • Osmond and Wausa for Boys Wrestling
    • Fremont, Fremont Bergan and Logan View for Boys Bowling and Girls Bowling
  • Approval of the following cooperative sponsorship renewals for the 2024-25 and 2025-26 school years:
    • Elkhorn, Elkhorn North and Elkhorn South for Girls Wrestling
    • Kearney and Kearney Catholic for Baseball
  • Approval of the dissolution of the following cooperative sponsorship for the 2024-25 school year:
    • Omaha Christian Academy and Omaha Street School for Boys Basketball and Girls Basketball
Motion Carried: 7-0

2. Moved to approve a request from member schools to adjust when bands are permitted to perform during state volleyball at Pinnacle Bank Arena. Motion Carried: 7-0

3. Moved to approve a change to the State Team Bowling Championships format to allow for the event to be televised. Motion Carried: 7-0

4. Moved to permit Norris, Homer, Omaha Marian and Maywood to opt-up one classification in Speech and to permit Omaha Marian to opt-up one classification in Music. Motion Carried: 7-0

5. Moved to approve using Ticketmaster as the ticketing platform for State Volleyball, Girls Basketball and Boys Basketball at Pinnacle Bank Arena. Motion Carried: 7-0

6. Moved to approve additional funds be provided to member schools who host postseason events, with payments being made at the end of the school year. Motion Carried: 7-0

7. Moved to approve the Winter Activity Manuals (Bowling, Wrestling, Swimming & Diving, Basketball and Music). Motion Carried: 7-0

8. The Board and Staff discussed the Class Caucus and Legislative proposals for change to the NSAA Constitution & Bylaws and/or Approved Rulings.

9. The Board heard a report from Cordell Frerichs, a student from South Platte High School and a member of the NSAA Student Advisory Committee (SAC). Frerichs reported on attending the NFHS Leadership Conference, the NSAA SAC theme for the 2024-25 year, "It's Our Time", planned service projects during NSAA State Championships and setting goals to inform communities about the work of the NSAA SAC and NSAA.

10. NSAA Staff reports included the following informational items:
  • A Mental Health Video Series will become available on the NSAA YouTube Channel later this fall
  • A new Request for Contests document has been created to assist member schools in finding contests on open dates
  • The NSAA office received over 300 auditions to sing the National Anthem at NSAA Championships
  • The NSAA received proceeds from the sales of the Nebraska Coaches Association Gold Card
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 11:36 a.m.

The next meeting of the NSAA Board of Directors will be Wednesday, November 6, 2024 at the NSAA Office in Lincoln
