8-Man Football Declarations

It feels like we are headed down the road of having three 11-man classes within the next 10 years, whether we want to or not. I'm not one bit opposed to it if it makes sense in terms of competitive balance within the class but do wish we had the days of 50+ schools in C1 and C2, which was not that long ago. I've always thought if we had less classes we would have more coops. Schools are so afraid of entering a coop and jumping up a classification that often it stops it from happening.

Class A, which 25 years ago I believe was our smallest class, will soon be one of our largest with the continued opening and growth of metro area schools. Do we get to a point where the lower half of A (Norfolk, Columbus, North Platte, Fremont, Elkhorn's, etc) and a chunk of B (Scottsbluff, Ralston, Skutt, Waverly, Norris, SSC, etc) form what we now know as B and the smaller B's (Aurora, York, Seward, Gross, Roncalli, etc) morph into class C1?
Agreed. I wish C1 and C2 could be healthy again, but with the lack of effort to form more co-ops and consolidations hurts that. Plus the football participation issue.

I think Roncalli will be C1 next year.

population shift is something we will see more in Nebraska, small communities under 3500 not near the interstate or Lincoln or omaha will continue to get smaller. With those surrounding he Lincoln and Omaha area will grow, C1 and C2 may shrink but in time it will return and grow again. This is a major shift right now but will settle out in the next 10 to 15 years. You will see more coops and consolidations but it will take time.

Any word on what class the coop between Omaha Brownell-Talbot, Cornerstone Christian, and Quest Forward Academy will be? The number would have to be around 100, but didn't know if they would opt down and still play 8-man.

Will Conestoga opt down to 8-man again?
Anybody hear what Lutheran High Northeast is doing? They were at the end of their 2 year exemption.

> The link and file that shows up says those are from November 2020

Ya, you're right. I'm pretty old. Hard for me to keep the school years straight. 2022 sounds like science fiction to me!

Good afternoon board --

I'm looking at getting the 8-man teams for the upcoming years sorted out (hopefully enrollment numbers are released soon). The following teams have not declared for 2022-2023 and have at least some possibility that they could be 8-man. Does anyone know what these schools are doing?

Brady
College View Academy
Conestoga
Cornerstone Christian, OBT, & Quest Academy
Crawford
Dundy County Stratton
Exeter-Milligan-Friend
Gibbon
Heartland Lutheran
Hershey
St. Francis
Louisville
Maxwell
Lutheran High Northeast
Medicine Valley
Morrill
Mullen
Nebraska Christian
Nebraska Lutheran
Niobrara-Verdigre
North Platte St. Pat's -- gotta be 11, but they have been 8-man eligible recently
Palmyra
Pawnee City
Paxton
Perkins County
Sandy Creek
Santee
Shelton
South Platte
Sterling
S-E-M
Superior
Tri County
Wauneta-Palisade

Just trying to get a handle on the upcoming season.

Thanks!
Looking at todays' updates on the NSAA website...(11-11-21)

EMF has declared for 8 man
Nebraska Christian 8 man
Perkins County 8 man

Updated list of what I'm still looking for:

I think it would be safe to assume there is a 0% chance Santee will be 8 man.

From what I've been told l, Lutheran high will be well over the 8 man # and will likely play 11 man. With them using Memorial Field in Norfolk, there's no work on their end to switch a field from 8 to 11 man.

If true its great to see them back.

I know this thread is about 8 man but I'm really curious as to how the 11 man ranks work out.

I'm assuming Gretna and Gretna East will be B along with the new LPS schools. Also, won't the new OPS schools be B too likely? Does any of the other OPS schools, such as Benson, drop because of lower enrollment with the new schools. Does Platteview move up into class B?

Moving on down many traditional class B programs appear they could fall below the 160 mark and move into C1 if you just purely go off the 8th-10th grade enrollments from last year, though this is tough to figure as some of these cities have small parochial schools that end in 8th grade and they are so close to the line that a new kid or two moving into or out of the district could effect it. It appears York, Alliance, Mc Cook, and Aurora all have potential to be below 160 and in C1. If so, do any opt up? I've always thought C1 is a really good competitive class and if those traditional B schools fall into C1, man that will be a fun class.

On to C2 where there will likely be a ton of change. northeastNebraska commented that they are splitting C evenly this year, into C1 and C2. If so there could be 5-8, if not more current C1 teams that will drop into C2. This potentially includes two teams in the C1 Semifinals tonight in Battle Creek and Kearney Catholic as well as potentially North Bend, Malcolm, Fillmore Central, Louisville, Mitchell, Milford, O'Neil, etc.. C2 is gaining a couple from D1 but are also losing more in Crofton, Twin River, Sutton, BRLD, and potentially more. It would be great to see Lutheran High in C2 again. Regardless, if C is split evenly then there will be a major shake up.

Paxton and Wa-Pa may be wildcards and maybe they jump back to D2?

I just went through the archived threads. Looks like classifications will come out the first or second week of December. So we are about a month away. I just complied into a word doc classifications numbers from 2016-2017 cycle, 2018-2019 cycle and the current cycle.

I was searching for the list of Class B in 1993, the year before the big A-B-C1 shift, when B was still 64 teams. Was kind of interested in how many of those 64 (that because of my age I consider the 'traditional Class B) are now in C or D. Haven't found it yet.

Going by trends and past schedules I can't see these teams leaving the six man ranks...I think you could take these teams out of your numbers for 8 man.

Paxton and Wa-Pa may be wildcards and maybe they jump back to D2?
I doubt Paxton or Wallace make a move. Paxton was way low on numbers two years ago and I think I saw a pic of Wallace's team after their quarterfinal win that had 11-12 kids. A co-op eventually here probably makes sense but I think they will stay put for now.

Garden County going 6 man next cycle is interesting. Wasn't too long ago they were 11 man. Also saw Kimball declared 8 man. Must be confident they have some young kids coming up???

Would Wallace co-op with Paxton or try Sutherland? I know Sutherland doesn’t need Wallace but they are down the Highway from them.

Yeah that's what I was going to say, there is no shot Paxton and Wallace ever co-op. Sutherland would be a realistic option if that is ever needed. Wallace already uses Sutherlands track for practice in the spring so they must have some form of decent relationship. The other thought would be Hayes Center but their confusing logistical co-op with Maywood will make that somewhat impossible.

Sutherland is probably closer for sure. Not sure they would want/need them at this point. I've heard Sutherland picked up some Hershey transfers for this year. Just rumor, but given what has been discussed on here about that situation I'd believe it. Hayes Center and Perkins County both kind of in the same area down there too. Road south of Paxton is actually pretty good with the exception of a couple of sharp corners. Paxton's facilities are top notch as far as that goes.

Edit: Quick google work shows 33 miles to Paxton, 27 to Hays Center, 32 to Grant, and 26 to Sutherland.

There are quite a few kids that live on the Paxton Elsie Road which is south of Paxton that go to Wallace currently. Which is somewhat confusing considering the kids that live in Elsie have the option to go to Perkins County or Wallace.

Crazy how that is in some of these towns! I've seen a Med Valley bus picking kids up in Maywood a few years back as well.
