Shot Clock

Just curious, looking through the basketball manual I don't see any distinction on JV vs. V. Nor in the NFHS Shot Clock Guidelines or Operator's Guide posted on the NSAA site.

Not saying it's not true, just curious where you're seeing no shot clock for JV.
I believe I saw something from the NFHS about it. I'll have to see if I can find it again

Another large issue that is often not discussed enough is kids starting team sports as young as 4. When I was growing up youth basketball started in January as a 3rd grader for 4-5 Saturdays with the parents teaching us some basic skills for an hour and then playing 3on3 for about 15 minutes at the end. My first tournament, and only one for the year, was in 5th grade. Did another tournament in 6th grade. Football didn't start till 7th grade. In high school we won the conference regular season basketball title my senior year. Played in a district final my junior season. Made state football playoffs three of four years. Was a part of a relay team in track that placed 4th at state my senior year. We didn't win state championships but we were also by no mean bad teams. I spent countless hours on the cement pad shooting hoops by myself and went to one basketball camp each summer. That was enough to give me the opportunity to play NAIA basketball. Sadly, no way in hell does is a kid take the path I had and have the opportunity to play NAIA today.

Now days, by the time kids reach their freshman season of HS they've already played for nine years. How many games have they played when you add up their school and club teams? And yet we are suprised when kids don't want to play any longer. These clubs and facilties are making money off us families. The days of dad working with their son or daughter in the backyard is over. How many millions/billions of dollars is the youth sports industry today? Go into any facilty and you'll see some 23 year old recent college grade giving lessons to a 9 year old that mom and dad spent $25 for the hour. We play youth basketball league on Sundays as early as 10am from November thru February.

This new normal is benefiting the elite athlete but not sure about the other 99%.

This is a Facebook Post from a friend. This is not my post, but it really stuck with me. Is this the problem or part of the problem? I don't know for sure but can certainly see how it could be at the very least a factor.

Lots of folks are upset because athletic teams are forfeiting seasons or canceling programs all together in Nebraska. Low numbers of participants is largely being blamed.
This isn't the kids fault.
Y'all have taken shit too far.
These kids realize, to play football and see the field, you start about 15 minutes after track season is over. Camps, summer weights, etc.
If you don't do them all, you won't see the field.
So the kids devote a significant portion of the summer to it. Throw in a few basketball or wrestling camps along the way. It makes it nearly impossible to have a summer job or do typical teenager stuff. Then they get the joy of the has beens who went 2-6 or 0- and forever critiquing and pressuring. Many of these teenagers probably have a better grip on reality and priorities than the parents and community members.
I'm not against families doing club ball and pushing their kids a little. I'm not against coaches providing opportunities for kids to get better if they choose. I just think we need to realize that more kids are going to step off the hamster wheel, especially if they are disadvantaged financially.

Why dont we
Haha, exactly! We’ll have to start calling it the 'Participation Bowl' where every team leaves with a trophy and a ribbon! At this rate, the only thing we’ll need to worry about is running out of space in the trophy case. Maybe we’ll throw in a ‘Best Uniform’ award for extra flair, too. Can’t have a state champ without looking good while doing it!

Haha, now we're talking! I love it—let's just hand out a plaque to every team and call it a day. At this rate, we could just print 'Congratulations on Participating' banners for everyone! And hey, if you're not winning enough, just drop down a class until you get that sweet, sweet state title. We’ll be handing out more trophies than a little league tournament! Maybe throw in a ‘Most Improved’ trophy for every team, too!

Maybe you should write up a proposal and see if it passes. If nothing else, it could be the perfect way to stir the pot and get everyone talking about how to save high school football from becoming a watered-down version of itself. Who knows, maybe it'll catch fire and we'll all be thanking you for saving the game!
LOL Okay lets just stay with the sarcasm I will write a proposal that says we have 12 classes of 16 or 16 classes of 16 whatever it takes, all make the playoffs at the start of the year we just mail playoff plaques and we give 16 state titles a year, If your team doesnt win at least half of its games in a three period you can go to a lower class if you want and keep doing it until you win

This is all literally insane We are about to water down football to the point it means very little
If A/B and D3 passes and everyone gets your way We will have 9 classes of football with the largest class maybe having 40 schools in it and some classes having as little 16 I think class A who should be 32 schools and then B the next 32 and C the next 64 and then D the rest one class and then 6-man Thats it

I love how we have class A looking at splitting the class A1/A2 , having a AB playoff & creating bowl games, creating schedules based off last years success, complaining about the transfer portal they created with open enrollment, etc. Then 8 man school wants to simply add a class and its seems like a crazy idea.
The A/B failed and rightly so

Lots of interesting ways to look at this issue for sure. Hell, I'd be all for absorbing class B into A and C-1. The best part of this is the schools get to vote on it. If it's something they feel is viable and necessary it will pass. If not, it won't. One thing I have noticed in the past is a lot of these proposals take a few years to gain any traction. I don't think this issue is going away.

Not saying I don't agree with you but looking at it, it would make the numbers in those three 8 man classes similar to every other class in the state. I'd argue you could bump C1 into class B and drop C2 into 8man, split 8 man 3 ways and have some really competitive football. That makes it 6 classes.
As found on X. The difference in the middle class of 8 man would be 8 kids in schools. There are currently a dozen less 8 man schools than in 1990, so it's can't be that it's growing so fast. Come on now. We don't need another class of football. The two largest NSAA districts voted to raise the 8 man number to 55, and not add a class. At some point we are going to have a few classes....likely A and B, that don't have many schools...maybe 30 in one and 15 in the other. That's ok...

Football will be difficult. Deciding on what size differences from the top school to the bottom school are acceptable in a class will be hard to get people to agree on. I'm saying we don't need a class that the smallest school has 24 kids while the biggest has 32, we can spread that number out a bit, and stop worrying about how many schools are in a class.
